7 Things No One Tells You About Living Alone

Considering moving out and living alone?

We’ve all daydreamed about living alone. No housemates to clean up after, all the downtime you could ever want, never having to watch a TV show you don’t really feel like watching. On top of all the surface level stuff, it’s also a huge milestone to be able to afford living on your own. Only thing is? Living alone isn’t always easy, and comes with its own share of challenges. It’s worth having a think about all that alone time before you take the leap and pack your whole life up.

No Need to Listen to Anyone Else’s Decorating Demands

You’ve probably had saved photos on your phone and Pinterest boards dedicated to styling your own place for years, and now, you can finally make your styling dreams a reality. Only thing is, decorating is expensive: styling your place exactly as you’d like becomes a not-so-realistic reality pretty soon after you move into your own place.

It comes hand in hand with no longer having housemates. The plus-side? You don’t have to saw your couch in half when you inevitably move out when it’s all yours, and you’ve spent all your own hard-earned money on it. (Don’t forget Facebook marketplace is your friend… you never know what you can find on there for cheap, or even free).

Budgeting’s Going to Get Trickier

Fill in the blank: living alone comes hand in hand with ____ _______. More privacy? Sure. More space? Debatable. More time alone? For sure. More savings? Uhhh. Not so much.

There’s no doubt about it. Living alone is expensive. You’re not sharing costs on groceries, furniture and bills with anybody else anymore – it’s all on you. Independence can be a great feeling… so long as you budget for it.

To start off, wait until you settle in – moving in for the first time brings up a lot of unexpected expenses. Once you’re in a routine, try setting up a monthly budget that you can stick to, by building it around where most of your expenses come from: groceries, bills, etc.

Where You Live Matters

When you’re struggling to afford a one-bedroom place on your own, it can be tricky to pick and choose where you live. Sometimes, it comes down to what you can afford. Despite that, you should still do your best to find a place in an area you actually want to live in.

Your best bet? Make sure:

  • You’re close to places you actually want to spend time (a nice cafe, a park nearby, a decent takeaway place)
  • Your friends aren’t too far away
  • Your work commute is decent
  • You like the community you live in, your neighbours are essential when you’re living alone

Of course, you still want to be able to afford rent, too. Try your best to meet somewhere in the middle: somewhere affordable, but not too far from where you really want to be.

Finally living alone. That means: no cleaning up after your housemates anymore, or writing up any cleaning rosters… actually, scratch that. You’ll still have to write a cleaning plan every week, only this time, you’ll be the only one on the roster.

You have to stay on top of it all the time to keep your house clean when you’re living alone – it’s what happens when you’re the only one holding yourself accountable, and no one else is around to complain about your mess. The silver lining? You get to clean when you want, however you want.

Tackle a few chores everyday, and you won’t have to spend your whole weekend cleaning – it’s the best method to keep yourself in check when you’re living alone.

You Always Run Short on Space

You’d think when you’re living alone, you would suddenly have way more space in your life. In reality, living alone = only being able afford a small, one-bedroom place, probably a studio style apartment. It’s likely going to be the kind of place without any built-in wardrobes, either (but that’s life).

Moving out to live on your own doesn’t magically turn you into a minimalist, unfortunately. It’s best to create that space for your stuff someplace else. With TAXIBOX, you can essentially create your own spare room, that you can store out of the way (safely in a TAXIBOX facility, until you need it delivered back).

Moving On Your Own Is Hard Work

Ever tried moving a fridge by yourself? We don’t recommend it. Just because you’re planning on living alone doesn’t mean you should plan to move on your own, too. Moving is hard work, and it might require asking for help (i.e. offering friends pizza as payment).

Our tip? Make it a little easier on future you by cutting out a few steps of moving day. Why bother renting a truck, worrying about insurance, and driving your stuff all the way from your old place to your new place when you can get TAXIBOX to do it for you?

Get a TAXIBOX delivered to your door, pack at your own pace, and get it redelivered straight to your new address. If you need a hand, you can also add removalists to your booking (your friends with bad backs will thank you). Got a bit of downtime in-between places? We can even store your stuff in-between moves, while you wait to get the keys to your brand new life as Ms (or Mr) Independent.
